Why it Happens:
Children typically encounter more distractions and experience greater freedom at home than in the structured environment of a Kumon centre. They may perceive home as a place for enjoyment rather than learning, which can lead them to seek your attention or adopt a more relaxed attitude in this setting.
What You Can Try:
Recreate the “Kumon Class Environment” at Home
- Choose a quiet corner and set up a mini routine.
- Use a timer: “Let’s see what you can finish in 10 minutes!”
- Use phrases like: “Time to focus, just like at Kumon!”
Start Small, Stay Consistent
- For younger children, divide worksheets into two brief sessions.
- Offer incentives such as: “For every 10 minutes of focused work without leaving your chair, you can get a small treat or sticker. “
Make it Positive and Predictable
- Use a visual daily routine chart on the fridge so your child knows what comes next.
- Link Kumon time with something enjoyable like: “After Kumon, you get to pick the bedtime story tonight!”
- Reward consistency like: “Every day you finish your Kumon, you get a star. Five stars = a mini reward!”
Talk to Your Instructor
- If homework struggles happen often, feel free to reach out. Kumon Instructors are available to assist. They can modify worksheet levels, provide strategies, or offer support to both you and your child.
